On a wintery Iowa day, I attended the virtual Iowa ACAC Winter session of Admissions Counselor University (ACU). During this session, we covered ethics, territory management, building connections, and communicating with gen z. Toward the end of our meeting, we were joined by a great panel of high school counselors and career advisors who provided insight on best practices when talking with students and visiting schools.

I particularly took interest in the best ways to chat with current high schoolers. Though it feels like high school was not that long ago for me, much has changed in the 6 years since I roamed the school hallways. The pandemic and the rise of TikTok has really shaped the method in which younger generations obtain information and communicate. While us counselors know the ins and outs of the admissions process, we have to remember that this is a whole new step for these students. Simplifying the way we communicate and being available is crucial in connecting with students and getting them admitted to our institutions.

As a new member of Iowa ACAC, I feel fortunate to be part of a network of welcoming faces. Thank you to the Professional Development and Practices Committee for hosting! Special shout out to a familiar face I found in the crowd, Jim Heinrichs (Iowa State University). I am looking forward to getting out there and meeting everyone!
